Week In Review 2012W44

  • 4M Window 8 upgrades in 3 days which means basically no one is interested. When your install base is 1.25B you can throw around absolute numbers to mask relative failures.

  • You know how people are comparing 32G “Surface with Windows RT” (really, that’s name!) with 32G iPad ? Well turns out a 32G iPad has a bit over 30G free but 32G Surface only has 16G free out of the factory. Really, true story. You lose 5G to windows recovery tools (really ? on a tablet ?), another 8G to Windows, Office and other random crap and another 3G cause Microsoft advertises using “the decimal system”. You really can’t take microsoft out of microsoft.

  • ARM is pushing ahead with interesting new big/small architectures.

  • The US government believes if you store data in the cloud you lose ownership of the data. Which by itself is stupid but it becomes insulting when you consider at the same time music and movies industry retains ownership of everything, virtually forever, in any media and format no matter how it has been distributed.
