Week In Review 2012W32
Turns out Samsung stuff is made by underage workers. Sadly, as there’s no Apple in that story there also no coverage. There’s coverage of the trial though and the funniest things come up in discovery, such as a 140 page document on how to make the galaxy more like the iphone. Still, not as bad as Nokia which in one go sold off Qt to Digia and a bunch of patents to someone involved in annoying ringtones. Digia promises they’ll bring Qt to Android and iOS. If you don’t know Qt, it wasn’t brilliant to start with, Nokia messed it up for a couple of years and it’s basically just a way to create bad apps faster.
The Internet Archive is seeding its archive. I guess that makes them pirrrates or something. There’s a good chance you won’t be getting them any time soon cause your ISP is throttling torrents. It’s not the ISPs faults really. You see, network vendors come with magic trafic management boxes they promise will use advanced algorithms optimize network trafic and thus save millions. If an ISP doesn’t have a real engineering team management will believe it and deploy bug ridden boxes on their network that do fingerprint analysis and sabotage traffic they recognize as “p2p”. On the other hand, you’re probably using a decent torrent client and your traffic will just sail by. (it’s been nearly 2 years since I’ve been presented such a box, there’s a chance they work better now. also, not all vendor are the same and some actually work)
Wikileaks published the Stratfor files detailing the mass survailance of innocent civilians going on and by some freak coincidence it got hit by massive DDoS. I’m sure the FBI and the CIA and Europol are working tirelessly to find the culprits and shut them down. What ? Nothing is being done ? Well I guess launching DDoS to hinder the operation of a web site is no longer a crime. Also, considering Google is going to pay a record $22.5M for playing loose with Safari how much will these guys pay ? It’s all happening on the same week US decides it can’t sued for illegal wiretaping.
The EU is puting 400k EUR into an extrajudicial framework for better censorship. Or “a non-legislative ‘framework’ that consists of general principles and best practices… to counter the illegal use of Internet” as they like to call it.
Zeus reached Blackberry. I bet you guys were saying, “well, nothing worse can happen to RIM now!” And it’s sucking to be Microsoft too with their fail security. But hey, they might even figure out how to configure an IMAP server.
US can’t work with Mexico to bust up the drug cartels but it sure can get Ukraine and Mexico to arrest some demonoid guys in what will probably turn out to be a dotcom grade screw up.
Google payed 1.5% tax in UK last year. The US Republicans think that’s too much cause according to plan Mitt Romney would pay about half that. Maybe that’s why they taped someone whose name sounds like Ron Paul for VP. Who’s next ? Lincon Abrami ?
The funniest things happen when you manage to deposit a spam check.
